The candle symbolizes light in the darkness of life, especially individual life. It is the symbol of holy illumination of the spirit of truth. In times of death, they signify the light in the next world, and they represent Christ as the light. Purification and cleansing are also closely related to fire, flame and candle.
In Christian contexts, candles can symbolize Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. Catholics often leave candles on the grave to show that prayers have been said for the deceased.
In Judaism, the holiday Hanukah is the 'Festival of Lights', and a candle is lit for each of the eight nights. Used to ward off evil spirits, life is considered protected as long as the candle burns.
